Tyson Foods officials are investigating alleged animal cruelty at a contract farm in Lewisburg, Tenn., that was captured on videotape by activist group Mercy For Animals. The group announced the availability of the footage today.

The video, which Mercy for Animals said was shot within the past few weeks at the Lewisburg farm also includes footage taken over the past year at other farms and slaughterhouses.

Mercy for Animals said the video demonstrates the need for Tyson to reform its animal welfare policies.

“Tyson Foods has not only the power, but also the ethical responsibility to end the worst forms of animal cruelty in its supply chain,” Nathan Runkle, president of Mercy For Animals, said in a news release.

Tyson Foods said the company is investigating the video. In a statement provided to Meatingplace, the company said:
“It’s disturbing to us to see any sick or injured birds, which is why we have a track record of quickly addressing animal welfare concerns.

“Our veterinarians and animal health experts are looking into these claims, which re-use old videos about matters we’ve already investigated and taken action on. If our investigation into this farm uncovers anything wrong, we will immediately address it.
“The health and well-being of the birds raised for us by independent farmers is extremely important, which is why we employ veterinarians and coordinate third-party animal well-being audits of the farms that supply us.”
