Food and Water Watch released a list of poultry plants that have converted to USDA’s optional New Poultry Inspection System (NPIS), saying consumers have a right to know which products are produced at facilities participating in the program.

Food and Water Watch contends that poultry inspected under the system is less safe because company employees rather than USDA inspectors handle more inspection responsibilities.

The group obtained USDA records through a request under the Freedom of Information Act that show 41 poultry processing plants participate in the program.

“Since it’s completely ridiculous to expect shoppers to bring a spreadsheet to the store, the only real solution is to stop the implementation of this system altogether,” Food and Water Watch said.
