Since May 26, there have been three confirmed cases of porcine epidemic diarrhea  Virus (PEDV) on sow and finishing hog farms in southeast Manitoba, according to a Manitoba government website.

All three cases were in close proximity to each other, two on sow farms and one on a finishing operation. The producers are fully cooperating with the Chief Veterinary Office and have implemented control measures on the site. Epidemiological investigation is ongoing. Direct and indirect contacts and farms within 5 kilometers of the site are being contacted.

As of November 27, 2015, all premises in Manitoba previously confirmed to have PED, were determined to be PED Presumptive Negative following a negative status protocol developed by the Chief Veterinary Office and Manitoba's swine veterinarians.

Environmental testing
A voluntary PED testing program is ongoing at high-traffic sites that move or handle large numbers of pigs, including livestock assembly yards, federal and provincial abattoirs, truck-wash stations and livestock trailers. As of June 3, 2016, 12,769 samples have been submitted for PED testing from 20 high-traffic sites. Nine sites have tested positive for PED.

In a posting on its website, Manitoba Pork reminded hog producers that communication during a disease outbreak can limit the spread to other farms and help affected producers get immediate support for a fast recovery.

Noting veterinary/client confidentiality regulations, the group urged producers to pre-sign a Manitoba Pork’s Sharing of Information waiver before a disease event, which would provide herd veterinarians with the permission to use his or her professional judgment to share site status and location with other veterinarians and with Manitoba Pork, in order to better protect the industry and get you the support needed for infected farms.
