A bill that would require the labeling of all genetically modified foods in Canada has been introduced in that country’s Parliament.

Bill C-291, proposed by MP Pierre-Luc Dusseault, is not the first to be put forth for consideration. All previous attempts have fallen short.

Dusseault said in a news release posted on the Canadian New Democratic Party website, that nearly 90 percent of Canadians support the labeling of GM foods. He also referenced a Health Canada report on food labelling that indicated Canadians want the government to take concrete measures to ensure that GM foods are labeled.

“The Liberal government must allow Canadians to obtain as much information as possible on GM foods. To date, the Liberal government has refused to take action," Dusseault said in the release.

The bill was proposed just weeks before a hotly debated GMO labeling law is set to take effect in Vermont, a state that borders Canada.

Dusseault also noted an online petition posted on the NDP website calling for GMO labeling, that Canadian constituents can sign.
