Shannon Coleman, North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s 4-H agent in Cherokee County, was recently honored as a “Hometown Hero.”

Each year, the Modern Woodmen Chapters choose volunteer or volunteer group to be recognized for their community service or acts of bravery. This year, the organization added the award for youth clubs, and the Woodmen recently presented Coleman with that award, which included flowers, a big cookie and a $100 donation to the youth group of her choice. The 14-year Cooperative Extension veteran chose 4-H.

As 4-H Club Leader Lynn Hamby said, Coleman “always goes above & beyond and the kids look up to her.”

County Extension Director Doug Clement said Coleman’s “hard work and dedication to the families and youth in our area has provided direction in career selection; science, technology, engineering and math education; youth nutrition education, and many other positive 4-H experiences that will impact the lives of youth and families for many years.”
