North Carolina June hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on June 1, 2016 totaled 8.9 million head, up 2% from March 1,
2016. Market hogs, at 8.0 million head, were up 13% from last year and up 2% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 890,000 head, this was up 1% from last year and last quarter. The State’s pig crop during the March–May 2016 period totaled 4.7 million head, up 14% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 460,000 sows. Pigs saved per litter averaged 10.3, which is up from the 9.3 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 455,000 sows during the June–August 2016 and 450,000 during the September–November 2016 quarters. North Carolina currently ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
