The World Trade Organization (WTO) is expected to set up a panel of experts to address a second complaint filed by U.S. trade officials last month over whether China is in compliance with a 2013 mandate on duties on U.S. broiler products.

U.S. Trade Rep. Michael Froman asked the WTO last month to check whether China was meeting the terms of the order. Chinese government officials responded last week with a strong statement that it was working with U.S. trade officials and adding that its measures are in compliance with WTO rules in the wake of U.S.-China talks earlier this month, according to a statement.

China originally had agreed to the creation of the panel inquiry, according to WTO documents. The global trade regulator could decide on the issue before the end of the year, opening the door for an appeal by China if the ruling finds the nation at fault for non-compliance. It also might allow U.S. trade officials to ultimately impose retaliatory tariffs if the panel finds in China’s favor.
