N.C. June acreage release -N.C. farmers to plant more corn, sweet potatoes, less cotton and soybeans

• Corn plantings are expected to total 1,020,000 acres in 2016, up 29% from 2015.
• Cotton growers intend to plant 290,000 acres in 2016, down 25% from last year.
• Flue-cured tobacco growers expect to harvest 160,000 acres in 2016, down 12,000 acres from 2015.
• Burley tobacco growers expect to harvest 900 acres in 2016, down 100 acres from last year.
• Soybean plantings, at 1.63 million acres, are expected to decrease 10% from 2015.
• Peanut growers intend to plant 80,000 acres in 2016, down 11% from the planted acreage in 2015.
• Sweet potato growers intend to plant a record 96,000 acres, 9,000 more acres than last year’s record.
• Hay producers expect to cut 799,000 acres in 2016, up 3% from 2015.
• Winter wheat plantings totaled 480,000 acres, down 23% from last year.
