The U.S. Senate voted late Thursday to pass a bill establishing a national mandatory system of disclosure for foods containing genetically modified ingredients.

The proposal, which passed by a 63-30 vote, was a compromise between Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and ranking member Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) that would, in part, give food manufacturers three options — text on a package, a symbol or a link to a website — for affixing a GMO label to their goods.

The bill exempts foods in which meat and poultry are the main ingredients.
The Senate voted Wednesday in favor of cloture on the bill, limiting debate on it to 30 hours.
The bill moves to the House for approval before it goes to President Obama’s desk.
