The United States has filed a request with the World Trade Organization (WTO) to impose trade sanctions against India a year after winning a dispute over India’s restrictions on U.S. poultry, according to a report by Reuters.

Washington has requested a meeting with the WTO on July 19 to file a claim for compensation, Reuters reported, citing “an agenda circulated by the WTO.”

The U.S. poultry industry estimates that U.S. exports to India of poultry meat alone could exceed $300 million per year once India’s restrictions are removed — and are likely to increase substantially in the future as India’s demand for high-quality protein rises.

In June last year, the U.S. claimed victory after WTO’s Appellate Body rejected India’s appeal of WTO’s earlier finding that its ban on U.S. poultry imports violated international trade law.

India placed a ban on U.S. poultry in 2007 to prevent low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI). In response, USTR initiated consultations in 2012, refuting India’s claims that LPAI would mutate into a highly pathogenic form of the virus.
