American Humane, the country's first national humane organization and creator of the first and largest third-party farm animal welfare certification program, announced that Case Farms LLC of Goldsboro, N.C., has achieved certification through the organization’s American Humane Certified program.

"As stewards of animals, it's our responsibility to ensure that we handle and treat them in the most humane way," Case Farms President Kevin Phillips said in a news release. "The Case Farms quality commitment is to ensure the welfare and health of our chickens. We are excited for our company and associates at Case Farms LLC of Goldsboro, N.C., to be certified by and be given this recognition by American Humane. The certification assures our customers of the commitment and standards set by our company."

Case Farms, with more than 3,200 employees and 475 grower farms, processes 2.9 million birds per week and produces in excess of 800 million pounds of fresh, partially cooked, and frozen-for-export poultry products per year. The company has four processing facilities and one further processing plant in North Carolina and Ohio.

American Humane's most recent survey shows overwhelming popular support for the humane treatment of farm animals. Its Humane Heartland Farm Animal Survey polled 5,900 Americans and more than nine in 10 (94.9 percent) said they are "very concerned" about farm animal welfare. More than three-quarters (75.7 percent) said they are very willing to pay more for humanely raised eggs, meat, and dairy products.

"The welfare of America's farm animals is a major concern for millions of consumers," said Kathi Brock, senior advisor for American Humane's farm animal welfare program, in the release. "We applaud Case Farms LLC of Goldsboro, N.C., for making the humane choice and voluntarily stepping forward to undergo rigorous audits and earn certification from our American Humane Certified program."
