Demand and farming challenges overwhelm chocolate makers

For all the luxury it represents, chocolate is hard work. At French Broad Chocolate's South Slope factory, workers turn raw cacao into chocolate to form bars, create truffles, or enrobe caramels. In another part of the factory, the bars are wrapped and packaged to satisfy the company's thriving mail-order business, which ships all over the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and, for the first time this fall, Japan.
