Gov. Pat McCrory declares state of emergency as Hurricane Hermine nears

Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency for 33 Eastern North Carolina counties as Tropical Storm Hermine strengthened into a hurricane on Thursday afternoon. At 8 p.m., data from an Air Force Reserve “hurricane hunter” plane showed maximum sustained winds had increased to 80 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. That makes Hermine the fourth hurricane of 2016 in the Atlantic basin.
