Researchers say seaweed may reduce antibiotic need for hogs

Seaweed may help pork producers improve the health of their animals and reduce the need for antimicrobials.


Researchers at University College in Dublin area reporting that feeding seaweed to sows may improve piglet health, according to a report in the Press and Journal.


John O’Doherty, professor of monogastric nutrition at University College Dublin, said seaweed contained lots of properties which were beneficial to animal health, including vitamins, minerals and fatty acids.


Seaweed extract also contains a glucose called laminarin improves the gut structure of piglets, reducing both the risk of scouring during weaning and the amount of E.coli.
