JBS S.A. said China suspended poultry meat purchases from two of the company's plants in Brazil, the company confirmed in an e-mail to Meatingplace late yesterday.

Brazilian newspaper Valor Econômico had reported that China suspended the purchase of meat produced at five poultry plants in Brazil, effective immediately, due to sanitary irregularities, according to the secretary of International Relations for the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply Odilson Ribeiro.

The suspension affected JBS' units in Amparo, São Paulo state, and Rolândia, Paraná state. JBS said it is “evaluating the measure” taken by China.

The move also affects BRF S.A.'s plant in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul state, according to reports. The company said in a statement that it “has not yet been officially notified about the causes that led to the suspension of the unit” by Chinese officials.
The other two units suspended belong to co-ops Cooperativa Copacol, in Cafelândia (PR), and to Cooperativa Agroindustrial LAR, in Matelândia (PR), according to Valor Econômico.

Brazil's minister of Agriculture, Blairo Maggi, has recently returned from a visit to Asian countries, looking to expand trade of meat and other agricultural products with the region.
