Lighter birds curbing chicken production: DLR

U.S. broilers processed in September were lighter than those in August, a trend the Daily Livestock Report called “unprecedented,” as seasonally cooler temperatures typically lead birds to gain weight more readily, resulting in heavier birds at processing time.


Average bird weights at time of processing have been lighter by as much as 3 percent during some weeks of September. Average bird weights during August were half a percent lighter than a year ago and chicken production since July has been running close to, or slightly below last year, according to the DLR.
