Rodent causes problems for farmers, residents and roadways

Fine, white wood chips litter the ground around a large tree, its trunk gnawed to an hourglass shape as it sways in the wind.
A path can be seen ending several hundred feet away, across a pond, through thick underbrush, down a bank and into a ditch, along which some industrious creatures are dragging, floating and carrying their felled trees. The dams they build backing up ditches, flooding crops and washing out culverts.
