The only Animal Welfare Act-approved poultry processing facility in the southeast closed its doors last month, leaving farmers in six states scrambling to fill holiday orders. The nearest U.S. Department of Agriculture-approved slaughterhouses are in Ohio, Kentucky, Kansas and Alabama, and some farmers said the future of local poultry may have been jeopardized by the closure.
