North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia each logged its warmest year on record in 2017, extending a trend of above-average annual temperatures, according to new federal data released Thursday. Most scientists blame rising levels of atmospheric greenhouse gasses for the warming trend, which is expected to continue as political resistance builds against domestic and international efforts to curb man-made climate change.
