Members of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) and their counterparts from Mexico and Canada will gather in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico this week for the 27th annual Tri-National Agricultural Accord. The Tri-National Agricultural Accord represents a longstanding commitment among the senior state and provincial agricultural officials of Canada, the United States, and Mexico to work together collaboratively on agricultural trade and development issues. The importance of the cooperative relationship for the agriculture and food processing sectors of all three countries, especially following the successful conclusion of negotiations on the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), will be the key focus of this year’s Accord.

“We are pleased with the successful negotiations on the USMCA and look forward to working with our counterparts from Mexico and Canada to ensure the agreement’s timely ratification,” said NASDA President and New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte. “The agreement modernizes our trading relationship and addresses a number of issues from improved market access to modernized Sanitary and Phytosanitary provisions that we as states and provinces have highlighted during recent Accord meetings. This progress made by the agreement will serve us well as we continue enhancing our relationship with two of our closest and most important trading partners. We look forward the opportunity this week to further our collaborative partnership for the benefit of North American agriculture.”

Nuevo León Secretary of Rural Development Rodolfo Farías Arizpe is hosting this year’s Tri-National Accord. The U.S. Delegation will be led by NASDA President and New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte. North Dakota Commissioner of Agriculture Doug Goehring, New York Commissioner of Agriculture Richard Ball, and Washington Director of Agriculture Derek Sandison will serve as U.S. Co-chairs. The Canadian delegation will be led by Manitoba Minister of Agriculture Ralph Eichler and the Mexican delegation will be led by Puebla Secretary of Rural Development and Sustainability Rodrigo Riestra Piña.

NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association which represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories. NASDA grows and enhances agriculture by forging partnerships and creating consensus to achieve sound policy outcomes between state departments of agriculture, the federal government, and stakeholders.
