Sen. Richard Burr on Friday addressed the issue of new Food and Drug Administration rules on cigarettes while speaking at the annual meeting of the North Carolina Association of Tobacco Growers.

Association executive vice president Graham Boyd said 500 to 700 people were expected to attend the meeting at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. Boyd said Burr discussed congressional issues, including new FDA rules. Those rules require tobacco companies to give their formulas to the FDA, beginning in June.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler also spoke to the group about tobacco policy in the state, including the lack of contracts for some farmers from major cigarette companies.
