September NC hog report

All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on September 1, 2014 totaled 8.4 million head, up 11% from June 1.  Market hogs, at 7.53 million head, were down 11% from last year but up 12% from last quarter. Breeding stock totaled 870,000 head, down 1% from last year and up 1% from June 1, 2014. The State’s pig crop during the June – August 2014 period totaled 4.37 million head, down 8% from the same period last year. These pigs were produced by 460,000 sows, a 2% decrease from the same time last year. Pigs saved per litter averaged at 9.5, which is down from the 10.1 pigs saved during the same quarter last year. North Carolina producers intend to farrow 450,000 sows during the September – November 2014 quarter and 445,000 sows during the December 2014 – February 2015 quarter. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally, behind Iowa, in the total number of hogs and pigs produced.
