U.S. Senate and House Agriculture Committee leadership on Thursday urged the USDA extend by 90 days the public comment period for the agency’s proposed rule regarding revised organic livestock and poultry production standards.

Agriculture Committee Chairmen Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and Rep. K. Michael Conaway (R-Texas) and Ranking Members Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and Rep. Collin Peterson (D-Minn.) sent the agency a letter expressing multiple concerns with the proposed rule and want USDA to address those concerns before publishing a final or interim final rule.

Senate and House committees this week held hearings on the U.S. livestock and poultry sectors, which included testimony from a variety of producers.
