6-12 Math: Using Manipulatives for Conceptual Understanding

Mathematics should be represented in as many ways as possible. From concrete (manipulative) to pictorial, to abstract to enhance learning.  In two days you will receive hands on experience using many different manipulatives to cover concepts vertically from middle to high school.

Solving Mathematical Problems Using Multiple Representations

This class will enable you to teach students to learn and master fewer mathematical concepts in greater detail. Students will also learn these concepts using a three-step learning process  through concrete, pictorial, and abstract steps. In the concrete step, students engage in hands-on learning experiences using concrete objects such as chips, dice, or paper clips. This is followed by drawing pictorial representations of mathematical concepts. Students then solve mathematical problems in an abstract way by using numbers and symbols.

Using Algebra in Real Life in Middle School

Algebra is about the unknown and putting real life problems into equations and solving them.  Unfortunately, Math textbooks go straight to the rules, procedures, and formulas forgetting that these are real life problems being solved.  We will discuss many Algebraic topics that will engage students and develop students' thinking, logic, pattern, and problem-solving by using hands-on activities.

Geometry to get Middle School Students Involved

How can we make Geometry interesting and get the students to conceptually understand the importance of Geometry?  We will apply many standards using multiple research methods to be able to teach Geometry and explore the standards using many hands-on activities.
