BioMike Shaw is an American politician and technology executive who has served as a Republican member of the Alabama House of Representatives for District 47 since November 9, 2022. Born and raised in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, Shaw graduated from Vestavia Hills High School in 1990 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from Auburn University in 1995. He represents parts of Hoover and Vestavia Hills in Jefferson County, Alabama.
Shaw built a distinguished career in information technology, serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Mutual Savings Credit Union since 2004. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and founded the Hoover Technology Round Table, which comprises technological companies and professionals around the city. Shaw is the only state lawmaker with CISSP certification and has worked extensively in cybersecurity for decades. He serves as a board member of Birmingham Tech and has been appointed to Governor Kay Ivey's artificial intelligence task force and the Alabama Blockchain Study Commission.
Shaw entered local politics in 2016 when he was elected to the Hoover City Council, representing Place 4 with 66% of the vote. He was re-elected to the council in 2020 with 77% of the vote before transitioning to state politics. His path to the Alabama House of Representatives came after State Representative David Wheeler died suddenly in early 2022. The Alabama Republican Party selected Shaw as their nominee for the general election from among many qualified candidates. Shaw defeated Democratic opponent Christian Coleman in the November 2022 general election with 64% of the vote.
In the Alabama House of Representatives, Shaw serves on multiple committees including Ethics and Campaign Finance, Financial Services, Jefferson County Legislation, and State Government. He has been active in sponsoring significant legislation, including HB207, which expands the Office of Information Technology's duties to include cybersecurity and integrates tasks previously performed by other state divisions. He also sponsored HB266, the Restoring Educational Advancement of Completing High School (REACH) Act, providing nontraditional high school diploma options for students 17 years and older. Shaw has introduced legislation focused on cryptocurrency and blockchain regulation, emphasizing the need for Alabama to be "blockchain friendly" while maintaining appropriate protections.
Shaw is married to Shelley Shaw, who was also raised in Vestavia Hills and is a graduate of Vestavia Hills High School. The couple has two children and are members of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. The Shaw family has lived in Hoover since 2001, and Shaw has strong ties to both communities in District 47. Shaw previously served as chairman of both the Auburn College Republicans and the College Republican Federation of Alabama, and is a longtime member of the Mid Alabama Republican Club.
Beyond his political and technology careers, Shaw is also a songwriter who has released four albums that have won awards including the Billboard Songwriting Contest, International Songwriting Competition, and KCCM song of the year. He co-founded Destination Hoover International, demonstrating his commitment to economic development in his community. Shaw's current term in the Alabama House of Representatives ends on November 4, 2026.
