BioSteve Livingston is an American politician and businessman who serves as the Alabama State Senate Majority Leader, representing District 8 since November 5, 2014. Born in 1956, Livingston is a graduate of Scottsboro High School in 1974 and the University of Alabama in 1978. He has established himself as both a successful entrepreneur and dedicated public servant throughout his career in Jackson County, Alabama.
Livingston owns and operates The Fuel Center, Inc., formerly known as Dicus Oil Company, which distributes Chevron gasoline and lubricants. He began this business venture in 1982 and has maintained ownership for over 40 years. His entrepreneurial experience has shaped his legislative approach, as he frequently emphasizes the importance of reducing regulatory burdens on small businesses and operating government with fiscal responsibility.
Growing up in Jackson County, Livingston developed strong community ties and leadership skills through his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He also worked on his family's small cattle farm, which instilled values of hard work and future planning that he carries into his political career. His family has deep roots in Alabama agriculture, with his uncle John being inducted into the Alabama Poultry & Egg Association Hall of Fame in 1972 and the Auburn University Agriculture School Hall of Honor in 1997 for his contributions to founding Alabama's poultry industry.
Livingston's entry into politics came in 2014 when he successfully ran for the Alabama State Senate following the retirement of incumbent Shadrack McGill. As a first-time candidate, he won the Republican primary against State Representative Todd Greeson with 55.6% of the vote and then defeated Democratic opponent Horace Clemmons in the general election with 72.2% of the vote. He was subsequently re-elected in 2018 with 98.3% of the vote and again in 2022 with 98.2% of the vote.
Throughout his legislative tenure, Livingston has served on numerous committees and has been recognized for his leadership abilities. In 2023, his Republican colleagues elected him Majority Leader of the Alabama Senate following the resignation of Clay Scofield. Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed praised Livingston's impeccable legislative record and expressed confidence in his ability to positively influence all Alabamians in his new leadership role.
Senate District 8, which Livingston represents, encompasses Jackson, Madison, and DeKalb counties. The district includes both rural agricultural communities and areas with significant technological and aerospace industries, reflecting the diverse economic landscape of northeast Alabama. Livingston has consistently advocated for policies that support both traditional industries like agriculture and forestry, as well as emerging technology sectors.
Livingston's personal life has been marked by both joy and tragedy. He was married to Sandra Pike Steele-Livingston, a prominent businesswoman who served as president and co-owner of Enfinger-Steele Development. Sandra was known as one of Alabama's leading businesswomen and was actively involved in numerous community organizations. Tragically, she was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer during Livingston's 2014 campaign and passed away on April 28, 2014, at age 61. Despite this personal loss, Sandra encouraged Steve to continue his campaign, and he has dedicated his legislative service to her honor.
Livingston has four children- Laura Ann Mims, Jager, Chris, and Amy. He is also a grandfather to seven grandchildren. His daughter Laura Ann is an elementary educator, and his son-in-law Drew Mims serves as a Hoover police officer. The family maintains strong ties to the Scottsboro community, where Livingston continues to reside.
In the Alabama Senate, Livingston has established himself as a conservative leader who prioritizes fiscal responsibility, economic development, and agricultural interests. He currently serves as Chairman of the Permanent Legislative Committee on Reapportionment and Vice Chairman of both the Rules Committee and Local Legislation Committee. His committee assignments span diverse areas including agriculture, banking and insurance, finance and taxation, tourism, and transportation and energy.
Livingston's legislative priorities include supporting law enforcement, protecting private property rights, encouraging business development in rural Alabama, and advancing agricultural interests. He has been instrumental in efforts to expand broadband access across Alabama and has worked to cut taxes while maintaining fiscal responsibility. His business background provides him with practical insights into the challenges facing small business owners and entrepreneurs throughout the state.
