John Wiles represents Senate District 37, which includes the northwest portion of Cobb County. Sen. Wiles is the chairman of the State and Local Governmental Operations committee, vice chairman of MARTOC and chairman of the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on higher education. He serves on the Senate Administrative Affairs, Health and Human Services, Higher Education, Judiciary and Urban Affairs committees. Sen. Wiles is also a Deputy Whip of the Senate Republican Caucus. Wiles served in the State House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003. During that time, he served as a Deputy Whip for the House Republican Caucus. He was elected by his colleagues as chair of the Cobb County Legislative Delegation. In 2006, Sen. Wiles played a crucial role as a member of the Conference Committee on House Bill 1313, which provided sweeping reform to the government’s powers of eminent domain. This measure received overwhelming support from a majority of Georgia voters in the 2006 election. In 2005, Sen. Wiles sponsored legislation creating the Georgia HERO College Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to National Guard members, Reservists and the children of those who’ve proudly served our country. Throughout his tenure as a lawmaker, Sen. Wiles has concentrated on children and teen issues, having been instrumental in the introduction and ultimate passing of a bill to safeguard mothers and newborn babies through insured hospital care. Wiles received his undergraduate degree in 1980 from George Washington University and his Juris Doctorate in 1983 from Stetson University where he served on the Law Review. He began his law career as a prosecutor in the State Court Solicitor’s office in Cobb County in 1984. Sen. Wiles is a member of the Cobb County and American Bar Associations, State Bar of Georgia, Florida State Bar, Texas State Bar and the Colorado State Bar. He is also a member of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce, Marietta Kiwanis and Kennesaw Business Association and serves on the board of directors of the Acworth Business Association and the West Cobb Business Association. Sen. Wiles is managing partner of the law firm of Wiles & Wiles, which concentrates in commercial real estate litigation. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, where his father was serving in the U.S. Army, Sen. Wiles was raised in East Point, GA, and moved to south Cobb County in 1976. Wiles and his wife Janel have three sons, John Jr., Drew and Max, and two daughters, Margi and Quincy, and they attend NorthStar Church. September 2007
