BioEarly Years - John Olumba was born and raised in the 5th District on Wexford Street in Detroit and is one of five children. He graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit where he earned varsity letters in three sports. College and Law School -Olumba attended the University of Michigan for college and graduated with two majors, economics and political science. He was active in many organizations including the NAACP and the Black Undergraduate Law Association. Olumba’s hard work at U of M earned him admission and the Dean’s Scholarship to attend Northern Illinois University College of Law – one of the top law schools for students interested in public service, community, and elder law (law relating to senior citizens). Olumba also studied law in England at the University College of London. Serving the Community - While finishing law school, Olumba clerked with Brookins & Wilson, a top African American law firm in Chicago. Based on this internship, Olumba decided against being an attorney, a lawyer that practices in the courts, and began using his law degree in favor of lawmaking. Olumba believes many laws are unfair as it pertains to minorities, seniors, and the poor. By working in the Legislature as opposed to in court, Olumba believes he can create laws and policy that is fair and just. A Man of Religious Principle - Pastor Charles Adams baptized Olumba in his youth at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit. Currently, Olumba is a member of Vernon Chapel A.M.E Church. He is active teaching Sunday school, a member of the Men’s Choir and Fellowship, and a licensed preacher. Olumba has founded a mentorship group for young men and has coached youth basketball. He shares his life with his wife, Charsha Olumba and is the proud father of two daughters, Eliezra and Keziah Olumba.
