Senator Ramsey, a Democrat, was first elected to the Georgia State Senate from the 43rd District in 2006. He represents the citizens of Rockdale, Newton and DeKalb counties. He is Chairman of the DeKalb County Legislative Delegation and Vice-Chairman of the Rockdale County Legislative Delegation.

Sen. Ramsey serves in the State Senate as Chairman of the Urban Affairs Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Special Judiciary Committee. He is also a member of the Judiciary / Non-Civil and Insurance & Labor Committees. Sen. Ramsey is serving his third year as the Lt. Governor's special appointee to the Georgia World Congress Center Authority Oversight Committee. He is a consistent supporter of the DeKalb Regional Youth Detention Center, mentoring the detainees with motivational speeches and by serving on the RYDC advisory board.

Sen. Ramsey has received special appointments from Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on the Transportation Governance, Criminal Justice Reform and Juvenile Justice Reform task forces. During this summer and fall, Sen. Ramsey is serving on a Study Committee to examine the issue of "Expungement" of certain criminal offenses.

Sen. Ramsey recently received an A+ score on the Georgia Chamber of Commerce legislative scorecard. He has been twice named "Legislator of the Year" and has received numerous awards and recognitions from various community and civic organizations for his hard work and commitment.

A committed supporter of free health clinics in both Lithonia and Conyers, Sen. Ramsey has supported those patients and other citizens in need with annual holiday meals for the past six years.

Sen. Ramsey has been a consistent author of legislation during his tenure in the Senate. Gov. Deal recently signed Sen. Ramsey's SB 121, the annual license tag legislation into law at the Atlanta Braves game.

This recent legislative session, Sen. Ramsey also authored SB 277 and SB 278, as placeholder legislation for the "City of DeKalb" and the "City of Stonecrest" respectively. During the course of the summer and the fall, Senator Ramsey will conduct official Senate hearings to allow citizens to be heard on these important issues.

Ramsey began his professional career as a federal investigator. An attorney for 21 years, Ramsey has primarily practiced education, labor and employment law, as well as business, probate and criminal representation. Prior to his election, Ramsey served for seven years, as the first African American Judge to serve on Municipal Court in the City of Stone Mountain. Ramsey has been recognized by the State Bar of Georgia, as a "Mentor" to assist young lawyers acclimate to the practice of law.--August 2014-Senate Press Office.
