Bio

Assemblymember David Alvarez is a small business owner and has served for fifteen years in government, including eight years as a San Diego City Councilmember. His public service roles include the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, San Diego Association of Governments, and Metropolitan Transit System. He also served on the Board of the California League of Cities' Latino Caucus and the national Board of Local Progress, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing a racial and economic justice agenda through all levels of local government.

A proud advocate of the underserved in San Diego, Assemblymember Alvarez has made economic and environmental justice for all communities one of his top priorities in office. His successes included building parks, libraries and fire stations in neighborhoods that did not have them. He also led the effort to annually increase investment in the city's arts and culture programming during his time on the San Diego City Council.

David was the champion of the "Save San Diego High" campaign where voters approved Measure I, allowing San Diego High School to remain at its current location. He also successfully created one of the first Enhanced Infrastructure Financing Districts in California, and advocated for the issuance of bonds to accelerate the funding of critical infrastructure projects in Otay Mesa. He has been an advocate of cross border affairs to increase economic and cultural relations with Mexico.

David was born and raised in Barrio Logan. David and his wife Xochitl, a lifelong educator also from the area, are raising their daughter and son in the community they grew up in. He most recently volunteered on the Boards of Kim Center for Gender Equity, Camarada, the San Diego Coffee Training Institute, Circulate San Diego and his childrens' school PTA.
