Bio

Born in 1959 in Macomb, Ill., Illinois State Senator John Sullivan grew up on a family farm in Hancock County, Ill., the seventh of 11 children of Don and Rita Mahoney Sullivan. In 1981, he received his bachelor’s degree in history from Quincy College and upon graduation worked as an agricultural loan officer, first for Production Credit Association (now Farm Credit) and then for Rushville State Bank. In 1986, he joined his father and brothers in the successful family auction and real estate business, Sullivan Auctioneers.

In 2002, John, along with his family, announced his intentions to run for the Illinois State Senate in the 47th District—the largest in the state, covering all or part of 13 counties. Although the task seemed daunting for a Democratic challenger in the historically Republican-leaning district, John’s parents, 10 siblings and their spouses, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and volunteers joined enthusiastically in the campaign. After a long and hard-fought campaign, John won a surprising victory.

John immediately rolled up his sleeves and started working hard and diligently for his constituents in the 47th District. His record of working in a bi-partisan fashion with his fellow state senators and representatives in Springfield is unparalleled and something of which he is very proud. The ability to reach across the aisle recently earned him the distinction of being selected the “2011 Best Democratic State Senator” by Capitol Fax. His strong voice for Downstate Illinois and his common-sense approach earned him the position of Assistant Majority Leader in the Illinois State Senate.

John was re-elected in 2004 and again in 2008. He currently serves on five committees in the Senate- Higher Education, Transportation, Insurance, Revenue and Energy.

John and his wife, Joan, live on and operate a small grain and livestock farm in Schuyler County, Ill. They have four children—Matthew (wife Karla and daughters Lainey and Audrey), Emily, Luke and Mark.
