His is the 7th in the family and the 5th of the brothers. He grew up on the family farm and it was there that his sense of work ethic and morals were framed. This is also the place where he obtained common sense and was taught the application of self.

His mining career started out with him using a shovel cleaning around a preparation facility and occasionally breaking chunks of coal that were to big to get through the crusher. He eventually got to operate mobile equipment and became an accomplished heavy equipment operator. He then began working as a step up supervisor at age 21 and landed my first full time supervisory role at age 25 with Shand Mining , based in Indianapolis, but operating mines in Greene County. In 1991 the opportunity to start a new operation was offered and he accepted. (Black Beauty Coal Company) Rep. Ubelhor served as operation manager from 1995 through 2002. During this time the operations grew from 30 employees to nearly 2000. While employed at Black Beauty he had oversight of the largest surface mine built in the state of Indiana, the Farmersburg Mine employing approximately 240 miners. In 2002 the mines were sold to Peabody Energy where he currently serves as Operations Manager for two mines, Viking Mine and Miller Creek Mine employing 300 miners.

Rep. Ubelhor currently resides in Worthington, IN with his wife Lori. They met in Worthington and have been married for 24 years. Together they have two sons, August and Ross ages 22 and 18.
