Bio

Jim Butler determined at an early age that he would pursue a life of service to his country. A lifelong student of history, Jim decided through his studies that he could best achieve his desire to serve, even as a young man, through a career in the military. He set his sights on entering the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and becoming a naval aviator.

An Ohio native, Jim grew up in Washington Court House, Ohio. He worked hard to ensure fruition of his early goals. He was accepted into the Naval Academy and later graduated in the top 10% of his class. While waiting to begin training as a naval aviator, he obtained a Master's Degree in History from the University of Maryland. In flight school, Jim graduated at the top of his class and successfully qualified on carrier landings. This accorded him the privilege to fly F-14 Tomcats.

Upon leaving the military, Jim returned to Ohio. He entered and graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He now practices as a business litigator at Thompson Hine, LLP. This experience has provided Jim with an understanding of the challenges that face Ohio’s businesses.

Jim's desire to serve is also reflected in his volunteer work within the Dayton community. He is a member of Oakwood Rotary and he volunteers for the United Way. He is the former President of the Dayton Ballet Associate Board, which works to support the Dayton Ballet. He is a member of the Dayton Bar Association and Inn of Court.

The Dayton Business Journal recognized Jim’s achievements and dedication to his community when he was awarded the honor of being included amongst the “Forty Under 40” in 2011. This award is given annually to the top up-and-coming leaders in the Dayton Region.

In January of 2011, Jim was appointed to the Ohio House of Representatives to fill the seat that was vacated by Senator Peggy Lehner. He serves on the committees of Education (Member), Judiciary and Ethics (Vice Chair), Public Utilities (Member), Veterans Affairs (Member), Majority Policy Committee (Vice Chair), Aerospace Caucus (Co-chair).

Jim currently resides in Oakwood with his wife, Dr. Melissa Butler, and their three daughters, twins Katy and Bella (7), and Amelia (3). Jim, Melissa and their daughters attend church at St. Albert the Great in Kettering.
