Bio

In her first term in the North Carolina State House, Rep. Cynthia Ball has been actively working for the citizens of North Carolina. Demonstrating her commitment to strengthening public education in North Carolina, she visited every public school in District 49. To connect with her constituents on important issues, she has hosted Town Hall Forums on topics including- public education, healthcare, and nonpartisan redistricting.

​​ Rep. Ball has sponsored or cosponsored 44 pieces of legislation including one signed into law by Governor Roy Cooper after passing both the House and Senate unanimously. In recognition of her leadership skills, she was elected by her NC House peers to serve as Freshman Democratic Chair. She is one of the first two freshman legislators to ever receive the Legislative Excellence Award from the NC Police Benevolent Association, their highest award. Rep. Ball also received the Community Award from Our Youth Matters in recognition for her longtime service to the community. ​ Born in Franklin County, her parents instilled in her the importance of education and hard work. She attended public schools and then went on to UNC-Greensboro on a full academic scholarship, graduating with a BA in Psychology, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Rep. Ball also earned an MBA at Virginia Commonwealth University and pursued doctoral coursework in Human Resources and Organizational Development at NC State University.

​ After working in marketing research, she joined William Peace University (formerly Peace College) and then NC State University, directing their Development and External Affairs programs. She also served as the Executive Director of one of NC State's College Foundations. She is now practicing as a professional mediator, certified by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission. Her 30 years of work experience, managing her business, and working on public policy issues has prepared Rep. Ball for the legislative process and being a responsive public servant to her constituents. ​ Rep. Ball is serving in her second term on the City of Raleigh Civil Service Commission. She has served on and advised several boards including WakeUP Wake County, AnimalKind, Wake County SPCA, and Artspace. With other members of Community United Church of Christ in Raleigh, she advocates for social and economic justice and equity.

​ Rep. Ball and her husband Dr. David Aspnes, Distinguished University Professor of Physics at NC State, live in a National Register of Historic Places and Raleigh Historic Landmark mid-century modern home in central Raleigh. They are proud to tell you about the accomplishments of their children and grandchildren. Numerous cats and dogs have adopted them over the years and continue to give them joy.
