Bio

Born and raised on the Isle of Palms, Senator George E. "Chip" Campsen III is a 5th generation Charlestonian. A businessman, lawyer and state senator, he is married to Lalla Lee Laffitte of Columbia. They have two outstanding sons, George and Boyce.

Chip's Senate District (43) stretches along South Carolina's coast from Bulls Bay to Port Royal Sound, encompassing portions of Charleston, Colleton and Beaufort Counties. Consequently, Chip has been referred to as the Senator from the Sea Islands - which aptly describes not just the districrt he represents, but the life he has lived in the woods, waters and wetlands of South Carolina's coast. He considers his senate district the most beautiful district in America - and fights to keep it that way.

Chip graduated from Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant, SC and Furman University in Greenville, SC. He holds both a J.D. and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. Chip is a member of the S.C. Bar Association, a licensed Real Estate Broker, and holds a 100-Ton U.S. Coast Guard Captain's License.

Chip is Chairman of the Senate Fish, Game & Forestry Committee, Senate Religious Liberty Caucus, Senate Sportsman's Caucus, and Charleston County Legislative Delegation. He also serves on the Judiciary, Transportation, Rules and Invitations Committees, and the Judicial Merit Selection Commission.

Chip's legislative focus includes conservation and natural resources, constitutional law, election law, tax and fiscal policy, criminal justice reform, and government restructuring.

Chip enjoys applying his study of history, law, economics and apologetics to current events. In his free time Chip loves to manage wildlife habitat, hunt, fish and surf with his family.
