Bio

DISTRICT State Rep. Jon Bumstead of Newaygo was elected in November 2010 to his first term in the Michigan House to represent residents of Lake, Oceana and Newaygo counties.

EDUCATION Bumstead is a 1976 graduate of Newaygo High School, and was one of the first members of the Building Trades program offered through the Vocational Education program at what is now the Career Tech Educational Center in Fremont.

PROFESSIONAL After high school, Bumstead began his own construction firm, and over the last 30 years Bumstead Construction has built and remodeled many homes and been involved in numerous other construction projects. As a small business owner, he has employed many workers, tradesmen and subcontractors over the years, bringing millions of dollars into the local economy.

PERSONAL Bumstead, born in Fremont in 1957, has three children - Belinda, Ray and Jona - and four grandchildren. Jon's extended family has lived and worked in the Newaygo area since the mid-1800s. He is a third-generation member of the Newaygo United Methodist Church. He is a charter member of the Newaygo Jaycees, a member of the Newaygo Chamber of Commerce, serves on the Brooks Township Planning Commission, the Michigan Home Builders Association, the Newaygo County Building Review Board, and is a Newaygo Area Fire and Rescue Command Board Volunteer firefighter. Other memberships include a longtime member and past-President of Safari Club International, a life member of the NRA, member of Right to Life of Michigan, Michigan United Conservation Corps member, and Bumstead is also a member of the Michigan Sheriff's Association.
