Bio

On November 2nd, 2010 the citizens of Virginia’s third Congressional district elected Bobby Scott to his 10th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before his election to Congress, Representative Scott served the citizens of Virginia as a member of the House of Delegates from 1978 to 1983 and as a member of the Virginia Senate from 1983 to 1993.

Throughout his legislative career, Congressman Scott has worked tirelessly on behalf of the citizens of Virginia on issues of vital concern, such as health care and education. As a member of the Virginia Legislature, he sponsored the Neighborhood Assistance Act, a bill providing tax credits to businesses for donations to approved crime prevention and social service agencies.

Throughout his Congressional career, Mr. Scott has been a strong advocate of measures focused on the needs of children. He introduced the Youth Promise Act of 2007 designed to bring together families, schools and law enforcement to combat the Nation's soaring teen arrest rate. Representative Scott also sponsored the Every Student Counts Act which is designed to improve reporting and accountability for graduation rates among the Nation's schools.

Representative Scott believes that it is important for members of Congress to stand up for the rights of all Americans. In the Congress, Representative Scott has distinguished himself as a vigorous defender of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Congressman Scott is a strong supporter of the military and believes that it is vital that we provide the funding to support our troops in their global missions. Mr. Scott has also pushed for action on issues that affect our Veterans. During the 110th Congress, he introduced the House versions of the Forgotten Veteran's Retirement Compensation Act and the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2007 which were sponsored in the Senate by Virginia Senator Jim Webb.

The Congressman currently serves on the Committee on the Judiciary, the Committee on Education and Labor and the Committee on the Budget.

Representative Scott is a graduate of Harvard College and earned his law degree from Boston College Law School. He is a member of Saint Augustine's Episcopal Church in Newport News.
