One of Rep. Burton's legislative priorities has been to permanently repeal property taxes in Indiana. During the 2007 session, he was instrumental in passing legislation that capped property taxes. He is still working to pass the resolution in 2010 that will allow a constitutional amendment to permanently cap property taxes. Some of Rep. Burton's recent accomplishments at the Statehouse include legislation that requires free mortgage foreclosure counseling and education forums to homeowners who are in danger of losing their homes. Rep. Burton was the driving force behind the "In God We Trust" state license plate and is proud that Hoosiers have the option to acquire this plate at no extra charge. More than two million Hoosiers have already purchased this plate. Over the years, Rep. Smith Medal" from The Grand Masonic Lodge of Indiana Community involvement is incredibly important to Rep. Burton. He is a member of the Franklin Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Realtors, as well as the Indianapolis Board of Realtors. In addition, Rep. Burton remains involved in the Masonic Lodge, Murat & Franklin Shrine Clubs, and Scottish Rite, 33rd degree. He is also an active member of Greenwood Christian Church. Rep. Burton and his wife, Volly, have been married for 29 years. They work together in the Real Estate brokerage business. The couple has three children and six grandchildren. The legislative branch of government is a family affair for the Burtons. His brother, Dan Burton, serves as the U.S. Representative for Indiana's 5th Congressional District.
