Bio

Senator Mike Johnston has represented the people of Senate District 33 (Denver) since 2009, when he was appointed to replace former Senate President Peter Groff. He won his 2010 election to fill the remaining two years of Groff’s term, and he will soon start a new four-year term in the Senate since he won his race in 2012. He lives in Stapleton with his wife Courtney, their twin sons Emmet and Seamus, and their daughter Avalon.

He earned his undergraduate degree at Yale, his master’s at Harvard and his Juris Doctor degree at Yale. Senator Johnston wrote a book, “In the Deep Heart’s Core,” describing the resilience and passion of his students in the Mississippi Delta. His book was widely acclaimed by national education and community leaders and continues to be taught in classrooms around the country.

He has dedicated his career to education in and out of the classroom, and to enacting public policies that empower people who too often get overlooked. Senator Johnston also opened a new district public high school, MESA, in Mapleton. Just three years after its opening, MESA became the first district public high school in Colorado to get 100% of its seniors admitted to a 4 year college. In 2012, Senator Johnston chaired the Senate Finance Committee and was a member of the Senate Education Committee.
