Bio

Congressman Kurt Schrader (Oregon’s 5th District) was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008. He has been a public servant for over 3 decades. Congressman Schrader became a member of the Canby Planning Commission in 1981 where he served until 1996 when he was elected to the Oregon State House of Representatives. In the Oregon House he served as a member of the Joint Ways & Means Committee. In 2001, Congressman Schrader was one of 5 legislators asked by their peers to guide Oregon through the worst budget crisis since the depression. In 2003, he was elected to the Oregon State Senate and was immediately appointed to chair the Joint Ways & Means Committee. He continued to serve in that capacity until he was elected to Congress.

Congressman Schrader is a veterinarian and farmer who lives on Three Rivers Farm in Canby where he grew and sold organic fruit and vegetables. Before being elected to Congress, he owned and managed the Clackamas County Veterinary clinic in Oregon City. Congressman Schrader still maintains his veterinary license. The clinic currently treats companion animals (dogs and cats).

Congressman Schrader attended Cornell University where he received his BA in Government in 1973. He received his veterinary degree from the University of Illinois in 1977. Kurt and his former wife Martha have raised five children- Maren, Clare, Steven, Ryan (RJ) and Travis.

Congressman Schrader currently serves as a member of the House Committee on Agriculture, House Committee on Small Business and serves as ranking member of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Finance and Tax.
