Bio

Representative Dennis Bonnen serves the 25th Legislative District in the Texas House of Representatives, which includes Angleton, Bailey's Prairie, Bonney, Brazoria, Clute, Danbury, Freeport, Holiday lakes, Jones Creek, Lake Jackson, Liverpool, Oyster Creek, Richwood, Surfside, Sweeny, West Columbia and Quintana. Bonnen, who was first elected to the Legislature in 1996, is now in his sixth term of office. In December 2007, Speaker Tom Craddick appointed Bonnen to chair the Select Committee on Electric Generation Capacity and Environmental Effects. The committee is charged with preparing a long-term energy and environmental impact plan to be submitted to the 81st Legislature. In January 2007, Bonnen was honored to once again be named Chairman of the house Committee on Environmental Regulation by Speaker Tom Craddick for the 80th Legislative Session. As chairman, he has the tremendous responsibility of overseeing both state environmental issues and implementation of the Federal Clean Air Act in Texas. Nationally, he is a leader on environmental issues through his service as a member of the Executive Committee of the Energy Council, an international organization comprised of oil producing states and countries, and the Environmental Task Force of The Council of State Governments. He represents the State of Texas on air and water quality issues as a member of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Bonnen was also appointed to serve on the House Committee on Ways and Means for the 80th session. He represents various interests of District 25 as a member of the Texas Legislative Tourism Caucus, the Cultural Resources Caucus and the Rural Caucus of the Texas Legislature. In 2003, Bonnen was presented with the Texas Lone Star Leadership Award by the Texas Public Policy Foundation for demonstrating a commitment to the principles of liberty, good government, and sound policy. Bonnen is a previous recipient of the Fighter for Free Enterprise Award given by the Texas Association of Business, has been named named Legislator of the Year by the Association of Retarded Citizens, and the Flemings Fellowship for Outstanding Freshman and Sophomore Legislators in the United States. He has been presented the Partnership Award from the Angleton Area Emergency Medical Corps and the Good Citizenship Medal from the Cradle of Texas Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. In 2006, he was a Community Honoree for LULAC Council #4655. In Brazoria County, he serves on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement and the Advisory Board for Youth & Family Counseling. He is an active supporter of many community programs including the youth events at the Brazoria County Fair, BACH, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He is a charter member of the Angleton Exchange Club, SFA 500 and Brazoria Heritage Foundation and on the board of the Varner-Hogg Guardians. He belongs to the Levi Jordan Plantation Historical Society and is a lifetime member of the 100 Club of Brazoria County. Bonnen graduated from Angleton High School and cum laude from St. Edward's University in Austin where he was honored with an Alumni Achievement Award in 2000. He is married to Kim Martin Bonnen and they have two sons, Jackson and Gregory. The Bonnens make their home in Angleton.
