Bio

Tom Sands was first elected to the House in 2002. Tom is a banker, real estate appraiser and farm owner. Tom was born on September 13, 1954, in Muscatine, Iowa. He grew up in Columbus Junction and graduated from Columbus Junction High School in 1972. Following graduation, Tom attended Muscatine Community College. Tom has two sisters, Rita and Debbie, both of whom still live in Columbus Junction. Tom has three grown children, Joshua, Jacob, and Anna, and three grand children, John, Jenna, and Haley. All of his children and grandchildren live in eastern Iowa. An active member of the United Methodist Church of Columbus Junction, Tom has served on the Audit and Witness Committees. Tom is a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Louisa County Pheasants Forever, NRA, Corn growers and Soybean Associations, Louisa County Farm Bureau, Masons and Louisa County Shriners. Tom volunteers with the Louisa County American Cancer Society. Prior to serving in the House, Tom was a Concord Township Trustee from 1985 – 1989 and a member of the Columbus Junction City Council from 1996 – 2002. He has received numerous awards and honors for his legislative work, a few of which are- Iowa Association of Mortgage Brokers, Legislator of the Year, 2005; Iowa Bankers Association, House Republican Representative of the Year, 2004; Farm Bureau’s designation of Friends of Agriculture, 2004 and 2002; Perfect voting record from National Federation of Independent Business, 2004 and 2003.
