BioI am the eleventh of twelve children and a proud uncle to twenty-seven nieces and nephews. My father, Bill Carney, worked for Republic Steel, which later became LTV Steel, and my mother, Marcy Carney, raised me and my eleven siblings while also dedicating herself to St. Raphael’s parish and serving the elderly and infirmed of our community. I have been married to my wonderful wife, Jennifer Nelson Carney, an attorney at Bricker & Eckler LLP, since 2000. In early 2007, we became parents to our beautiful daughter, Clara. In late 2009, our second beautiful daughter, Maggie, joined the family. After graduating from Bay High in Bay Village, Ohio in 1994, I went on to receive my undergraduate and law degrees from Ohio State University in 1998 and 2001, respectively. While at Ohio State, I was president of the Undergraduate Student Government for two terms. Among other accomplishments during my time in student government, I negotiated with COTA to implement a city-wide busing program for all Ohio State students and also founded the student radio station, known as The Underground. I am currently an attorney in the Columbus office of Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur LLP where I counsel individual and corporate clients regarding a variety of issues primarily related to health care. In the Ohio House, I have worked for policies that benefit Central Ohio’s working families. Economic development needs to be our state’s top priority, which is why I have supported programs like Third Frontier – which has already created 41,300 jobs. I also co-sponsored HB 48 (129 GA), which made Ohio more competitive by ensuring business laws are comparably flexible relative to other states. Ohio must also invest in its educational system and encourage wellness. I supported strictly limiting state college tuition increases to 3.5% in the 2009-10 state budgets, as opposed to annual increases of about 10% per year in the past. To help control healthcare costs and encourage healthy habits in children, I introduced the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Act. This law improved school nutrition requirements and promoted exercise.
