Bio

Angela Williams is in her second term representing House District 7 in northeast Denver. She is chairwoman of the Business, Labor & Economic & Workforce Development Committee.

Rep. Williams’ primary focus as a legislator has been on issues surrounding business and economic development. She has been a small business owner for many years and currently owns the Angela Williams Agency, an insurance consulting firm. With a strong business background and interest in small business development, Rep. Williams has voted for bills to require the Department of State to implement a system for online business filings and to promote local entrepreneurship by forming Creative Districts. Her goal is to reduce red tape on small businesses and protect the health, safety and rights of Colorado workers.

Rep. Williams has also supported legislation to keep the state on the forefront of environmental issues through clean air, clean water, public health and job creation through clean energy investments.

Due to the high rate of mortgage foreclosures in her district, many of Rep. Williams’ efforts have been driven to also help homeowners experiencing financial challenges. She sponsored a bill which continued the foreclosure deferment program. She was also the prime sponsor of the Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program Bill. Although the Prevention Program bill failed to pass the Republican-led chamber, Williams is determined to reintroduce the bill in 2013 to help Denver families struggling during difficult economic periods.

In addition to her activities as a legislator and small business owner, Rep. Williams is very active in her community. As a co-founder of Chamber Connect, the Colorado Black Chamber of Commerce leadership development program, she has been essential to the professional growth of dozens of Colorado’s future minority business leaders. She has received a number of awards and recognitions including being recently voted as Colorado Biz top 100 Minority Businesses in Denver.

She is state chair of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and serves on the board of the Colorado Women’s Legislative Caucus. She also graduated from the National Organization of Black Elected Women Legislators Leadership Institute class in 2009, and from the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class of 2008.

Rep. Williams earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma, and she lives in Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood.
