Bio

REPRESENTATIVE Koven L. (K.L.) Brown was born in Lineville, Alabama on June 27, 1951.

His mother is an educator who had two children and then pursued her formal education; a B.S. degree at Jacksonville State University and a M.S. and Doctorate at the University of Alabama.

His father worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for over 40 years prior to retirement in 1988.

K.L. attended elementary schools in Ashland, Bynum, Eastaboga, and Jacksonville. He attended Junior High and High School in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Montgomery; graduating from Jefferson Davis High School in the Charter graduating class in 1969. He went on to graduate from the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science in Louisville, KY in 1971 and served as President of his class. He served six years in the Alabama Army National Guard in Montgomery and Mobile.

Brown purchased Roebuck Funeral Home in Jacksonville in 1978 and it became K. L. Brown Funeral Home and a crematory was added a number of years later. In 1999, he co-founded Brown and Kughn Memory Chapel in Anniston, and bought his partner’s stock several years later to form K.L. Brown Memory Chapel.

He has served as President of the Alabama Funeral Directors Association and the International Order of the Golden Rule (an international funeral service organization) and is a graduate of the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. He has also been a member of DMORT IV (Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team), a federal disaster team that responds to natural disasters and airline crashes.

He has been active in many civic and charitable organizations- Member and Past President of the Jacksonville Exchange Club, member of the Anniston Rotary Club, Board member and Past Chairman of Leadership Calhoun County, Co-Chairman of Board of Directors of The International House at Jacksonville State University, member of Hiram Lodge #42, F & AM, past board member of Hospice of East Alabama, advisory board member of Wachovia Bank of Calhoun County, worked to raise funds for Boy Scouts of America, United Cerebral Palsy of Calhoun County and United Way of East Central Alabama.

Brown and his wife were the recipients of the Jacksonville Exchange Club’s Book of Golden Deeds and K. L. received the Leadership Calhoun County’s Roy Crow Award.
