Bio

Born and raised in Rock County, Janis graduated from Evansville High School in 1968. She has been married to her husband Gordy, retired UAW member, for 42 years. She is the mother of two children and the proud grandparent of five grandchildren. After earning her degree in Finance from Madison Area Technical College, Janis served as Head Bookkeeper at Union Cooperative for four years. She then moved to her family’s business, Ringhand Meats and Beverages, where she worked for seventeen years. During that time, Janis became particularly interested in local government. Being a small business owner, local ordinances and state laws impacted their business and after learning more about the process, Janis decided to take a more active role in the community. Elected to the Evansville City Council in 1998, Janis served on the Council until she was elected Mayor in 2002. She eventually returned to the City Council in 2008 and stayed on until her election to the State Assembly in 2010.

Janis has been involved in several community organizations including the Stoughton Hospital Board, the Literacy Connection, her local Chamber of Commerce, the Governors Committee on Public Benefits, VFW Auxiliary Post 6905 and the Evansville Energy Independence Team. Since being elected to the State Assembly in 2010, Janis serves on three legislative committees- Urban and Local Affairs, Veterans and Military Affairs, and Rural Economic Development and Rural Affairs. She was also elected Secretary of the Assembly Democratic Caucus in Spring 2012. Although Rep. Ringhand currently represents the 80th Assembly District, she will be running for re-election in the 45th Assembly District because of the legislative redistricting plans approved by the Legislature last year. Under the new maps she was drawn out of the 80th Assembly District – with Evansville, Albany, Brodhead and Orfordville joining the City of Beloit in the 45th Assembly District.
