Bio

Bryan Hughes was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in November 2002 to represent District 5, consisting of Camp, Harrison, Upshur & Wood Counties. Representative Hughes is the Vice Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and serves on the Elections, House Administration, and Rules & Resolutions Committees. Hughes also serves as Vice Chairman of the Rural Caucus, an organization of legislative leaders dedicated to preserving rural Texas by addressing the unique needs facing rural communities and make sure rural interests are well represented in the Legislature. Bryan Hughes has gained a reputation as a hard working legislator who is committed to understanding the issues and voting true to his district. Representative Hughes is a principle-driven legislator who believes Texas has a strong and proud heritage of faith, family, and freedom. He works with his fellow legislators to preserve and encourage these values and ensure that future generations of Texans have even greater opportunities than those of us who have gone before them. A fifth generation Texan, Bryan was raised in a blue-collar family in Wood County, graduating from Mineola High School in 1987. After working his way through Tyler Junior College and the University of Texas at Tyler, Bryan was accepted to the Baylor University School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1995. Following Law School, Bryan was chosen by United States District Judge William M. Steger of Tyler to serve as his briefing attorney. After serving two years with Judge Steger, Bryan entered private practice of law in Marshall. He now practices law in his hometown of Mineola, where he continues to represent working families and small businesses. Since 1996, Rep. Hughes has served on the Board of Trustees of the Steward´s Foundation, a Dallas-based nonprofit organization that makes loans to churches for building projects and also provides health care assistance for Christian workers. He currently serves on the Health Care Committee. Rep. Hughes is also active in his church, Golden Bible Chapel, where he serves as an elder. He is a board member of the Mineola Foundation and a member of the National Rifle Association and the Rotary Club of Mineola.
