Bio

Senator Steve Martin represents Virginia's 11th Senate District, which includes a majority of Chesterfield County and all of Amelia County and the city of Colonial Heights. He has served in the Virginia Senate since his special election in 1994. Prior to that, he served in the House of Delegates from his election to that body in 1987. Throughout these years of service, Steve has focused on health, mental health, election law, property rights, economic development, and other issues that help make our Commonwealth a leader among the other states in the nation.

Senator Martin is a senior member on several standing committees in the Senate. He serves as the Chairman of the Education and Health Committee, and also serves on the Local Government, General Laws and Technology, Privileges and Elections, Commerce and Labor, and Rules Committees. He is also active in a number of national organizations and serves on several commissions, task forces, and committees dedicated to addressing health care issues.

Senator Martin has consistently received a score of 100% from the Family Foundation on his voting record. In the 2010-2011 year, the NFIB also awarded him a score of 100% for his pro-business votes. The American Conservative Union named Senator Martin a “Defender of Freedom” in 2011 with a 100% voting record and also designated him a winner of the ACU Conservative Award for 2012. The Virginia Chamber of Commerce recognized him as a “Champion of Free Enterprise”, with a 100% voting record, in 2012. Steve will also be a November 2012 recipient of the Alzheimer's Association Greater Richmond Chapter's Alzheimer's Advocate Award. Senator Martin has also received various awards from several different national and state organizations, specifically related to healthcare and welfare reform matters.

Steve was born in Chesterfield County and has seven siblings. He enjoys spending time with his sons and his two granddaughters, Olivia and Mckinley, and looks forward to welcoming his third grandchild in the near future. Steve is a member of South Richmond Rotary and Swift Creek Baptist Church, where he is involved in various ministries and efforts to meet the needs of others.
