BioMatt was born on December 30, 1983, in Marshalltown, Iowa. His father, Christopher, works for Union Pacific Railroad, and his mother, Jody, runs the family business Double Barrel Shooters Supply. Matt received his formal education at home before attending college for gunsmithing. Matt is a trained gunsmith and works at the family owned gun store in Missouri Valley. He also works full time as a switchman for the Union Pacific Railroad when not in session. Matt and Ivy Windschitl were married in July of 2003 and together they have two daughters, Anna who is 4 and Addy who is 2. Matt was first elected in 2006 at the age of 22 becoming the youngest legislator currently serving in the General Assembly. He was re-elected in November of 2008 and was then elected to serve as an Assistant Minority Leader by his Republican colleagues in the Iowa House in 2009. Matt Joined the United States Marine Corps in June of 2001 at the age of 17. He proudly served 8 years in the United States Marine Corps Reserves as a mechanic with the Engineer Maintenance Company, 4th Marine Logistics Group, 4th Maintenance Battalion. He served a tour of duty in Iraq in 2005, and was Honorably Discharged from the Marine Corps Reserves as a Sergeant in June of 2009.
