BioAs a native of Baton Rouge, I am personally vested in the success of my hometown. My parents, Edward and Patricia James, stressed to me early in life the importance of service to others, community empowerment, social justice and equal access to quality education. These core values are what guide me as I run for state representative. It is why I am not only running a people powered campaign, but why I am eager to work with you to move our district forward once I am elected.Education is key… I would not have found success in my life without the education I received right here in East Baton Rouge public schools. Upon graduating from McKinley Sr. High, I attended Southern University, where I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. While attending Southern, I was on the Dean’s List and was inducted into Beta Gama Sigma Honor Society. I furthered my studies at the Southern University Law Center, where I discovered a passion for using the law as a means of advancing sound public policy. All of our children should have the same equal access to a quality education. As state representative, I will fight for that right. Experience Counts… During the aftermaths of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, I joined the Office of Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco and dedicated myself to the recovery and rebuilding of Louisiana. In my capacity as the Governor’s Policy Advisor on Housing, Social Services and Community Development, I got down in the trenches with citizens, community organizations and small business owners to listen to their needs. As a result, I assisted in securing a $25 million investment in the Louisiana Housing Trust Fund and was instrumental in developing the Louisiana Relocation Program. After the Blanco Administration, I served as a Staff Attorney with the Louisiana House of Representatives where I further developed my skills in law and constitutional processes, as well as legislative drafting and advocacy. Based on the needs of Louisiana employers and the residents they hire, I drafted legislation that revamped workforce development and training and strengthened Louisiana’s unemployment and workman’s compensation laws. In 2009, I continued my professional experience as Special Counsel to the Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue where I was charged with developing the legislative strategy for the Department. I currently maintain an active legal practice where I often provide pro bono legal assistance to indigent clients. Proven Leadership… I was appointed by Governor Blanco in 2007 to simultaneously serve on the Louisiana Housing and Community Development Task Force and the Louisiana Occupational Forecasting Conference. In 2010, I was appointed by Governor Bobby Jindal to serve on the Louisiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. I have stood my ground as a lifelong Democrat with a proven record of bi-partisan leadership to effectively work with others to develop sound policies that impact the daily lives of our citizens. Community first… In addition to my professional public service, I work with various community based organizations and mentor students in several of East Baton Rouge’s public schools. I am also an active member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., two organizations that work to be their “brother’s keeper.”
